    A Failed Borehole Sample Starts A Longer Clock Than Owners Expect

    The failed sample is not the emergency. Owners of a private borehole tend to read the lab letter as the crisis and the retest as the finish line, and that gets the shape of the problem backwards. On a three-acre Welsh smallholding with a 1970s borehole, the real cost sits in the eight or ten weeks that follow, which is why so many households keep the water filtration systems they first bought as a stopgap. Treating the water at the point it is used is faster and cheaper than waiting for a driller to free up, and it usually becomes the permanent supply rather than the temporary one.

    The First Week Is Boiling And Phone Calls

    Week one is admin. The letter names a coliform count or a nitrate figure and rarely explains what to do that afternoon. Do not wait for a retest before you change how you drink the water; a failed sample is a result to act on, not a draft to appeal. Households phone the driller, who is quoting six weeks out, and then phone the local authority private water supply team, who may or may not be the people who took the sample in the first place. Meanwhile the kettle starts working overtime and somebody drives to the supermarket for flats of bottled water. That last habit costs more than owners admit.     Boiling is also less of a cure than it looks. It deals with bacteria and viruses well, but it does nothing for nitrate, and a January 2026 study in Nature Scientific Reports found that nitrate concentration actually climbs by roughly 0.75 mg/L with each boiling cycle as water evaporates off. A household that fails on nitrate and responds by boiling every kettle is therefore making the number worse, slowly, in complete good faith. Testing is the only thing that tells you which camp you are in, because taste and clarity tell you nothing at all.     Month Three Is Where Temporary Becomes Permanent

    By week six the driller has usually been out, and the part nobody budgets for begins. A chlorination and retest cycle on a borehole of that age often clears the sample for a fortnight and then fails again, because the fault is a cracked liner or a headworks that lets surface water in after heavy rain. Job after job on older smallholding boreholes, that is the case we see most often, and the fix is groundworks rather than a bottle of chlorine. Quotes for that kind of work land somewhere between £900 and £2,500 on a site this size, which is how a £1,200 contingency gets spent in a single phone call.

    By month three, the household that bought a treatment unit in week two has stopped thinking about the problem entirely. The unit sits between the storage tank and the kitchen tap, the kettle is used for tea again, and the bottled water line has gone off the bank statement. Owners who fully intended to sell the unit on afterwards mostly do not bother. Within 90 days the temporary answer has quietly become the supply, and the groundworks turn into a maintenance decision instead of a rescue.

    The Supply Smallholders End Up Trusting

    If you are on a private supply and the sample fails, treat the water before you drink it rather than waiting on a retest. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s emergency disinfection guidance sets the floor for a temporary supply: bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, or add 8 drops of household bleach per gallon where the bleach is 6% sodium hypochlorite, then test to confirm the result. Who must test, who pays and what a local authority is obliged to do all vary by jurisdiction, so ask your council’s private water supply team what applies where you live rather than assuming the rule you read online is the rule on your lane.

    The plain version is this. The clock after a failed sample is measured in months, and the household needs drinkable water on day one of it. That is the entire case for putting water filtration systems in ahead of the groundworks rather than after them: they cover the gap, they hold up when the borehole fails again after the next storm, and they do not depend on anyone else’s availability. Test properly, treat immediately, then fix the hole in the ground at whatever pace the trade allows.
